European fire salamandar

 European fire salamandar

European fire salamandar

The European fire salamandar is found in moist temperate forests of Europe where they feed on invertebrates. These salamaders are equipped with two rows of poison glands behind their eyes which are used for defense. When threatened, the European fire salamandar can squirt toxins a distance of up to 12 feet (4m). Their birght coloration serves to warn predators of their toxicity. The European fire salamandar is endangered due to habitat loss and possibly climate change. Recently large numbers have disappeared in Spain.
